AFPAA HALL OF FAME
Glenn Miller

On October 5, 2024, the U. S. Air Force Public Affairs Association named Major Glenn Miller to the AFPAA Hall of Fame at their annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas. As described by the AFPAA:

“The Air Force Public Affairs Hall of Fame recognizes those Public Affairs professionals who have made unique, significant, and lasting contributions to the United States Air Force. Members of the Hall of Fame, whether enlisted, officer, or civilian, were groundbreaking leaders in one or more of the specialties encompassed by the Air Force Public Affairs career field — Band, Broadcasting, Visual Information/Combat Camera, and Information/Public Affairs. They secured their places of honor in the history and traditions of the Air Force by their ceaseless and eminently successful efforts to earn it the trust, confidence, and appreciation of the American people. Hall of Fame members are selected on an annual basis and honored each year at the AFPAA Annual Meeting. Each new member — or their family representative — receives a unique trophy commemorating the honoree’s contributions to Air Force Public Affairs. Recognizing the significance of this special honor to the Public Affairs family, AFPAA’s Board of Directors has selected a permanent physical location for the Hall of Fame and is currently working with SAF/PA on plans for its establishment at the Defense Information School at Fort Meade, Maryland.”

Thanking the AFPAA and accepting the award on behalf of the Miller Family, Glenn Miller Collections and Glenn Miller Birthplace Society, Dennis M. Spragg presented a video describing Major Miller’s extraordinary wartime achievements and importance to Army Air Forces Public Affairs. The AFPAA Hall of Fame Award will be permanently displayed at the Glenn Miller Museum at his birthplace in Clarinda, Iowa. The video can be viewed here: Glenn Miller Award

IOWA HISTORY JOURNAL

From Iowa History Journal,” September/October 2024: “Clarinda native Glenn Miller, who scored more No. 1 records and Top 10 hits than either Elvis Presley or The Beatles, was America’s No. 1 bandleader from 1939 to 1942 before he joined the U.S. Army Air Forces to serve our nation during World War II and tragically died in a plane crash. On March 1, 1904, Alton Glenn Miller was born in the southwestern Iowa town of Clarinda. Although his parents would move along and raise him in Nebraska, Missouri and eventually Colorado, the man who became one of the foremost musical celebrities of the 20th century would always consider himself a proud Iowa native … as would idolizing media publicity. Miller fondly remembered Page and Montgomery counties as “cousin country,” and for good reason. Evidence of Miller’s cousins remains to this day in Clarinda and Red Oak. The first part of our in-depth, two-part series about the icon’s life and legacy, written by author and historian of the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society in Clarinda Dennis M. Spragg, chronicles Miller’s illustrious career and debunks conspiracies regarding his mysterious death.”

Gen. James H. Doolittle famously said, “next to a letter from home, (Major Miller’s) band was the most important morale booster in the European Theater.” The interview describes Miller’s reason for enlisting, activities stateside and in the ETO and his tragic loss in December 1944. MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW RECOMMENDATION

News Interviews

Midwest Book Review has recommended America Ascendant, the Rise of American Exceptionalism. Secondly, their recommendation is a “reviewer’s choice” or leading recommendation of the month from among many excellent books.

Furthermore, James Cox and Diane Donovan note, “American Ascendant: The Rise of American Exceptionalism discusses the global crisis that changed American history. President Franklin D. Roosevelt arranged a partnership between the U.S. government and media to communicate the threat of World War II to the American public. The purpose was to promote the idea of American exceptionalism. And to manipulate the public to support the government’s cause. Seldom has a connection between government and media purposes been so clearly explored. Spragg probes the underlying conflicts and ideals that had to be addressed in an effort to change the American mind. He pairs historical with political and social history in a survey replete in World War II events, media choices and representations. And government special interests. The result is a powerful, different view of American Exceptionalism and a history that belongs not just in American history holdings, but media studies collections.”

Consequently, this important recommendation is an honor. Therefore, Midwest Book Review captures the essence of the book and intention of the author. In conclusion, readers can find the Midwest Book Review recommendation of America Ascendant, the Rise of American Exceptionalism here:

U. S. ARMY MILITARY REVIEW RECOMMENDATION

News Audiobook

The U. S. Army Military Review has published an awesome review of America Ascendant, which says, in part: “The strength of America Ascendant is Spragg’s exceptional prose and style. It is simply hard to put down. His exhaustive research of both primary and secondary sources provides a comprehensive look of the Axis defeat from many perspectives. The work is highly readable and may be the most comprehensive examination of America’s public diplomacy efforts during World War II to date. This would be an excellent addition to the library of any historian or student with an interest on the subject.” Army Military Review also recommended Glenn Miller Declassified.
